Are you serious about wanting to write, direct, or produce a horror film but are having trouble putting your project together? Do you feel close to getting a horror film project going but are held back by gaps in your knowledge, skills, and connections? Then the Horror Film Boot Camp could be your ticket to success!

The Horror Film Boot Camp is coming May 7-9, 2010, to Albuquerque, New Mexico. It’s the world’s only training program dedicated exclusively to horror films – in one weekend, taught by experienced filmmakers.

Instructors announced so far include:

Writer and director Darren Lynn Bousman is one of the most successful horror filmmakers working today. He directed the three most popular installments of the Saw franchise – Saw II, III, and IV. Darren also directed the cult hit REPO! The Genetic Opera and the upcoming Mother’s Day starring Rebecca De Mornay.

Kurly Tlapoyawa is an actor, writer, stuntman, and the co-author of Direct Your Damn Movie, written with the legendary Lloyd Kaufman of Troma. Kurly has worked as a stuntman in films like Gamer and Crank: High Voltage and teaches courses on fight choreography.

Spooky Dan Walker has worked as a visual effects artist on over 50 TV and film projects including Final Destination 2 & 3 and Slither. He has a wide range of production experience including set building and makeup, and he’s also written for high profile horror websites like Dread Central and Bloody Disgusting.

Michael Emanuel is a successful commercial, TV, and film actor with credits including ER, and he’s also produced and sold a number of horror films. He was the lead actor in the acclaimed low budget Lucky and wrote, produced, and directed the film Maneater starring Dean Cain.

Moderator Lee Stranahan has been working in broadcast TV and film for 30 years. Lee was recently featured in Variety and is a regularly featured blogger for The Huffington Post. He has taught visual effects and filmmaking to thousands of people around the world.

This isn’t a lecture based class – you’ll get hands-on experience in casting, managing a crew, working with special effects and makeup, and even shooting scenes. You’ll see how the latest cameras and equipment compare. You’ll learn to create a budget, choreograph action sequences, and figure out the best recipe for blood.

For more information, including the exact topics to be covered and pricing for the weekend, visit the Horror Film Boot Camp website.

Upon being summoned by a strange small man on a bike, we found ourselves at Thorpe Park. We meet others in the game in the bar (a good start) and drinks were free (even better), but we were being put at ease, only for the games to suddenly pounce upon us?

We knew we were in trouble when we saw Brendon Cole (Strictly Come Dancing), but the fears eased when we met comedian Bill Bailey, surely Jigsaw could have nothing to cause him severe pain.

After a while we were placed into groups and given two guides. We followed them around the park until we saw the sign for the Saw Experience, where we were greeted by fire!.

After a short time we were split up again into smaller groups, to make it easier to get around the maze.

We walked into a small room where we saw Billy, sitting on his bike, never a good sign. He asked us if we wanted to play a game, but there was little choice, for as soon as we entered through the doorway the game began! We were ushered in by an FBI agent who wanted us to see what was being shown on the screens and shouting to go in single file and have hands on the person in front of you shoulders.

The clock started and we were sent on our way to complete the task at hand. Be warned it is not always good to be at the front or the back of the line! Having said that, it isn’t too good to be in the middle either. The rooms are darkened which made the atmosphere very realistic, but it was not too dark that you could not see what was going on.

I am not going to tell you which scenes were used from the films as this will spoil the surprise but I can say that from the time we entered until the time we got out, the screaming was heard from everyone in our group as we saw dead bodies and other nasty surprises! Being grabbed by a pig masked person is never good and those ankle grabbers – this is an experience that you will not forget quickly.

Even though it is a short walk through, you are terrorised from start to finish. I loved it and wanted to go back in for more. The make up was excellently done, very believable. The actors were amazing and did their job well.

Even if you have never seen a Saw film, I would definitely recommend going for the thrill and for those who love watching Saw films you will not be disappointed.

We were then led to the Saw Ride. Which is not for the faint hearted! But if you love roller coasters and being scared out of your mind then you must go on this ride. The 100ft climb followed by the 100 degree descent is breathtakingly scary.

We would give the experience a thumbs up, but we are worried that Jigsaw would chop them off.

Having been chilled to the bottom of our boots watching the most recent instalment of the terrifying and stomach churning Saw franchise – Saw VI – we got to pondering what it is exactly that makes the ‘scary’ quite so scary. From Jigsaw, to Frankenstein to good old Freddy Kruger the mere thought of certain horror characters are guaranteed to send an icy chill down the spine. But why? How does Hollywood manage to produce horror icons that can petrify even the hardiest of us?

Arguably it’s all to do with our more basic instincts, so we’re taking a quick, highly unqualified look at the psychology behind our most terrifying horror heroes. Why it is they make us tremble in our boots…

Film: Saw VI, 2009

Character: Jigsaw

Why so scary? Day of judgement

So, everyone has done things in the past that they are not proud of and the thought of these bad things catching up with us is one of the oldest scare stories in the book. Jigsaw and Billy are pretty much a puppety version of God with a more immediate plan than Hell and less of an inclination to mercy. The Saw franchise highlights again and again that none of us are perfect, and leaves us wondering what that alarmingly judgmental puppet would have in store for us…

Film: Child’s Play, 1988

Character: Chucky

Why so scary? Corrupted innocence

Everyone has a doll of some description when they are a child, you probably lavished attention on it and spoke to it in the vain hope that one day you could be friends. Imagine now that one day it had spoken back, and it was mean, really mean. The fear of Chucky is twofold: 1) the thought that all childhood implements have the potential for bad, 2) those cold, crazy blue eyes in a distressed but senseless doll face…eek!

Film: The Ring, 2002

Character: Samara Morgan

Why so scary? Death!

Watching The Ring basically means you’re going to die, and we all have to admit this is going to happen to us one day, like it or not! So thinking that a girl could any minute pop out of your TV screen with only one thing on her mind only adds to what is already a frightening concept for a film. Samara’s specific awfulness lies in her not just being simply evil, but because (see above) she’s also an evil child. Children have a unique status as icons of innocence, delight and life, so seeing a child who really, really wants to hurt you freaks us out. A lot.

Film: It, 1990

Character: The Clown

Why so scary? Fear of Clowns

Coulrophobia is a well known psychological problem, so we don’t really need to look far for an explanation here. Basically, clowns are scary. Even if you’ve never had a ‘bad experience’ (i.e. a clown asking you to smell his flower and then spurting ink in your face) you know that there is a fully grown man somewhere underneath all that makeup and fake hair, and that is just frightening.

Film: A Nightmare on Elm Street, 1984

Character: Freddy Kruger

Why so scary? Primal fear of claws

Quite apart from the unpleasant thought of being attacked in and by our dreams, the key to Freddy’s horrifying success lies in his hands. Apparently it’s all down to our evolutionary history that we are, deep down, terrified of predators with claws and the painful potential that they bring with them. Director Wes Craven was aware of this when he was making this classic horror.

Film: The Shining, 1980

Character: Jack

Why so scary? Madness

At the beginning of The Shining Jack Torrence seems like a normal man, so his descent into homicidal insanity is frightening for a number of reasons: Not only does he turn against his own wife and child, deliberately cutting them off from the possibility of external aid, but his behaviour also leads us to question those around us.

Film: Halloween, 1978

Character: Michael Myers

Why so scary? Unstoppable evil

After being described as ‘pure evil’ by your psychiatrist, it’s likely that you’ll be the frightening type, so try adding a mask to the mix and see what kind of reaction you get! Following Halloween, killers in masks became very much en vogue and you rarely get a slasher movie these days without a mask of some sort making an appearance. The theory behind the mask (ahem…) is that it dehumanizes the killer, making them an unemotional and detached murdering machine. This focuses your attention completely on the terror of the victim, so making you terrified…clever eh?

Film: The Exorcist, 1973

Character: Regan MacNeil

Why so scary? Possession

One of the first child horror heroines, Regan’s possession by the Devil is still possibly the most explicit and gruesome depictions of what could happen if Satan ever took a fancy to you. Like it or not, religion is all around us and these evil spirits tap into this vast backdrop of spirituality. Taping into the horror we have at seeing children do terrible things, William Friedkin highlights the bad side affects possession has including frightening your mum, embarrassing social situations and, frankly, a lot of pain

Film: Frankenstein, 1931

Character: The creature

Why so scary? Fear of the undead

Although not nearly as scary now as it was after its original release in 1931, Frankenstein’s classic horror imagery and motifs is still capable of frightening audiences anew well into the 21st century. The original zombie movie, it is complete with deserted towers, damsels in distress and a big killing monster on the hunt for revenge. The creature remains one of horror’s most familiar figures as it taps into our primal fear of corpses. And what might happen when technology finally catches up with our imaginations and we can reanimate the dead – i.e. nothing good.

Saw VI DVD and Blu-ray are out on March 8th from Lionsgate http://www.saw6movie.co.uk

“North Face” (THREE STARS out of four stars) pays tribute to the almost forgotten genre of so-called mountain films. The German movies flourished in the 1920s and ’30s and were packed with melodrama, romance and ice-capped beauty. “North Face,” playing this weekend only at the Detroit Film Theatre, is the old-fashioned, gripping tale of two German friends, circa 1936, who pledge to be the first to scale the most dangerous rock face in the Alps.

For them, it’s a matter of conquering the unknown. For the German Reich, on the eve of the Berlin Olympics, it’s a matter of national pride.

Chronicling their journey is an aspiring newspaper photographer and love interest for one of the guys. Director Philipp Stölzl cleverly juxtaposes the photographer’s fancy fireside dinners with the grueling expedition as the climbers encounter deadly setbacks. Though the film isn’t above using some computer-generated enhancement, it delivers the kind of genuine man-against-nature adventure that’s too often missing from films today.

7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday at the DFT at the Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward, Detroit. 313-833-4005 or dia.org/dft. $7.50; $6.50 students, seniors.

Burton books ‘The Room’ again: Tommy Wiseau would like you to think that the 2003 feature film he wrote, produced, directed and starred in was meant as a tongue-in-cheek dark comedy about a romance gone awry. Don’t believe it.

“The Room” (no stars) — rightly dubbed “the ‘Citizen Kane’ of bad movies” — is an entertaining train wreck of a melodrama about a sensitive San Francisco banker (Wiseau) who realizes that his wife is having an affair with his best friend.

Burton Theatre screenings of the film in late January found audience members not only reciting Wiseau’s angst-filled dialogue before he did but also wielding plastic spoons and soft inflatable footballs to toss at the screen. Word of mouth could turn this into a “Rocky Horror Picture Show”-style cult hit, and the Burton is threatening to bring it back monthly.

Haim had a full slate of upcoming projects that included romantic comedies, thrillers and 3-D slasher films.

As fans, family and the Hollywood community continue to comprehend the news of Corey Haim’s sudden death on Wednesday, details are emerging about some of the many projects the ’80s icon had been working on. A peek at Haim’s upcoming slate reveals plans for a big comeback, a desire to direct and an affinity for everything from slasher to political films.

Here’s the latest information on Haim’s rumored, finished and never-filmed projects, straight from the mouths of those who were working with him in his final days.

“The Throwaways”
Arguably the most formidable of Haim’s upcoming projects, the actor was scheduled to direct and star in the political thriller about homeless people gone missing. Writer/producer Eric Goren said he had been working closely with Haim on the project, but after expressing sympathy for Haim’s family, vowed that the movie will be made with another filmmaker.

“A Detour in Life”
“We were in the midst of looking for funders, investors. Now we have to fill his shoes. He was the director, the producer, the lead. Those will be big shoes to fill,” explained Jeremiah Vaughn, a producer on the film. “It’s a coming-of-age tale. [Haim's character] was going to be married, then his wife is killed in a horse accident. He turns to alcohol, sobers up, then meets a teacher and falls in love. I’m very sorry that Corey didn’t get to direct and star in it. We need to get some funding and get this off the ground in memory of Corey.”

“The Science of Cool”
Haim was scheduled to play a janitor in this comedy, which was in pre-production when he died. Writer/producer Eric Goren told MTV News that Haim was working on the project up until the end and insisted that the film will still be made.

“Ratred 3D”
“Unfortunately, that project was slated to shoot at the end of July/August, so there’s not one frame of footage with Corey in there,” explained Anthony Purzycki, producer/creator of the horror film he described as “28 Days Later” meets “Silence of the Lambs.” “The film is about a religious cult murdering people in a small town; his character would have been the Gatherer, a scavenger that collects material from the victims. … There was a stigma because of his past, but we never saw it; he was as professional as you could be.”

“SAD (Standard American Diet)”
“It’s an anti-FDA piece about the American diet; the story is based on current events. Corey was going to play the part of a chemical engineer,” said director/writer/producer Tim Vogel, explaining that Haim was trying to get Alexis Bledel to appear as his wife in the “Fast Food Nation”-like project. “We tried to get him down here last fall to shoot some scenes for a trailer, but it never materialized. … We’re moving forward with ‘SAD.’ It’s still a timely piece that needs to be told. Corey will be in our hearts and memories, and we’ll dedicate the film to Corey. He would’ve been perfect for the role. He was really coming around.”

“The Vegetarian Hunter”
“We had sent him a script, and he loved it. He wanted to shoot that. We were going to do it in upstate New York,” director/writer/producer Vogel said of a second project he had in the works with Haim. “Basically, it’s about a hunter who goes to New York, falls head-over-heels for a girl he meets who is vegetarian, he becomes vegetarian, and she does good things to animals that backfire. It’s a romantic comedy.”

“The Pick Up”
“It’s ‘Deer Hunter’ meets ‘The Strangers,’ ” Jeremiah Vaughn described of the film, which would have been shot in Louisiana and starred Haim as a Michael Myers-like slasher. “It’s a horror hybrid psychological thriller. He was going to play the son. In the film, his dad dies, and he takes over as a killer in his father’s footsteps.”

“Job”
Despite rumors to the contrary, Haim will not appear in this upcoming slasher flick. “Somebody thought it was funny a long time ago to put him on the IMDb page,” explained the film’s producer, Lota Hairston-Hadley, who in fact did speak with Corey Feldman at one point about being in the movie. Hairston-Hadley said that she had been receiving calls about Haim ever since the news broke and was working to have his name taken off the page.

“Decisions”
Being positioned by some as Haim’s “last” movie, the late actor shot the film in November. In it, he plays a foul-mouthed troubled cop working with problem kids; the film is expected to hit theaters in April, and a scene involving Haim was recently released to TMZ.

“American Sunset”
The Web site for this thriller has a slickly produced trailer showing Haim being abducted and apparently tortured as he tries to rescue his wife. Promising a “Usual Suspects”-style twist, the site promotes the film as “Corey Haim’s big comeback to movies” and promises a late 2010 release.

“The Dead Sea”
Producer Rick Tucker told TMZ that Haim had demanded a “clean” set to keep him away from temptation as he shot the film in his final days. The film is about a team of mercenaries trapped aboard a naval vessel filled with zombies; it remains unclear how many of his scenes Haim had completed before his death. “I respected Corey as a fellow actor and will solely remember him for his talent,” co-star Fabian Carrillo told MTV News in a statement. “I especially enjoyed his work in ‘The Lost Boys’ and looked forward to further working with him in ‘The Dead Sea.’ He will be missed. My heart goes out to his mother and my sincere condolences to his family.”

It’s fair to say Martin Scorsese is king of the film nerds; every movie he has ever made is packed with references and allusions to earlier masterworks, everything from The Red Shoes to King of Kings. He has outdone himself with his new film, Shutter Island: he has taken the Hitchcockian atmosphere of murderous insanity and run with it, shoehorning in one Hitchcock bit after another.

Scorsese has form in this area: a couple of years ago, he shot a promo film for a Spanish cava-maker which took the shape of a very smart fake documentary; in it he claims to have discovered a “lost” Hitchcock script, which he then takes it upon himself to shoot. Have a look at it online at bit.ly/eEuz; it’s almost a pitch document for Shutter Island on its own.

In the spirit of Hitchcock homage, here’s a new game: when you watch Shutter Island – which is released tomorrow – every time you spot a Hitchcock reference, shout out the title of the film Marty pinched it from. Shutter Island could become the new Rocky Horror Picture Show if we put our minds to it. Trust me, you’ll be the most popular person in the cinema. Try these as a starter:

• For no real reason, Scorsese sticks his camera right under a showerhead. Water streams either side of the camera, then gurgles down the drain. Fortunately, no one gets stabby. “Psycho!”

• Leonardo DiCaprio peers over a hair-raising clifftop drop and decides he has got to get down somehow. Cue him scrambling down to the shoreline and hanging off the rock face – just like Cary Grant on Mount Rushmore. “North by Northwest!”

• A gun follows its target, fixed to the bottom of the camera. It’s kind of like a video game, you might think – if you were a 15 year old. But Leo Carroll did it first, threatening to shoot Ingrid Bergman before turning it on himself. “Spellbound!”

• Sometimes it feels like Shutter Island is one long thunderstorm. A hurricane’s a-coming, rain batters down, lightning flashes across the sky. Fortunately, Hitchcock once made a film where the heroine – Tippi Hedren – had a pathological fear of the things. One bit, where a tree smashes through a wall, is a straight lift. “Marnie!”

• DiCaprio grabs a gun and trudges fearfully up a very, very tall building. In Shutter Island it’s a lighthouse, rather than a Californian mission, and DiCaprio isn’t overcome by acrophobia. But this is Jimmy Stewart Mk 2. “Vertigo!”

• Shutter Island has its own creepy Nazi-type figure; man-in-the-shadows Max von Sydow, whom we first see lurking mysteriously in Ben Kingsley’s gracious living room. Scorsese got the idea for introducing him via the back of his head from Cary Grant moodily watching a couple dancing. “Notorious!”

There have got to be more. Hitchcock buffs all over the planet are presumably engaged in the internet equivalent of a nuclear arms race to identify every single reference. Time to stand back and let the real obsessives take over.

Corey Ian Haim (December 23, 1971 – March 10, 2010)[1] was a Canadian actor, known for a 1980s Hollywood career as a teen idol. He starred or co-starred in a number of films such as Lucas, Murphy’s Romance, The Lost Boys, License to Drive and Dream a Little Dream. Most notably, he collaborated numerous times with Corey Feldman, the pair being dubbed “The Two Coreys”. Haim and Feldman starred in a TV reality show titled The Two Coreys,[2] which aired on the A&E Network from July 2007 to August 2008.

Early life

Haim was born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of Judy, an Israeli-born data processor, and Bernie Haim, who worked in sales.[3] He had an older sister, Carol.[4] Haim was raised Jewish.[4][5] He was enrolled in acting lessons by his mother in an attempt to help him overcome his shyness. Haim, not particularly fascinated by acting, participated in other activities, such as hockey, playing music on his keyboard and collecting comic books.[6]

Career

1980s

Haim first broke into mainstream acting playing the role of Larry in the Canadian family-oriented comedy television series, The Edison Twins, which ran from 1982 through until 1986. Haim made his first cinematic appearance in the 1984 feature film, Firstborn, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr. In 1985, Haim appeared in minor roles in Secret Admirer and Murphy’s Romance and starred in the leading role in a feature film version of Stephen King’s novella Silver Bullet, playing a paraplegic boy alongside Gary Busey. Haim started to make a name for himself in the industry, notably by earning his first Young Artist Award as an Exceptional Young Actor Starring in a Television Special or Movie of the Week for the television movie A Time to Live.

Haim’s major break was in 1986, billed as the main star alongside Kerri Green, Charlie Sheen, and Winona Ryder in the popular movie Lucas. Haim would receive a nomination for an Exceptional Performance by a Young Actor Starring in a Feature Film – Comedy or Drama at the Young Artist Awards for his role as the title character. Film critic Roger Ebert gave Haim good reviews.[7] Following the success of Lucas, Haim starred in the 1987 television series Roomies.

In 1987, Haim had a featured role in Joel Schumacher’s vampire film The Lost Boys, alongside Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland. The film was well received by most reviewers.[8] Besides gaining Haim more renown, the film began his famous partnership with Feldman. The performance earned him another Young Artist Award nomination as Best Young Male Superstar in a Motion Picture. In 1988, Haim starred in two more widely released films: License to Drive, a financially successful teen comedy co-starring Feldman, and the horror film Watchers. Haim won his second Young Artist Award, tying Feldman for the Best Young Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Fantasy award for License to Drive.

Haim and Feldman appeared in the film Dream a Little Dream. The film spawned the Billboard Hot 100 number one single Rock On for Michael Damian, with the pair appearing in the song’s music video. That year Haim released a self-promotional video documentary entitled Corey Haim: Me, Myself, and I.

1990s

Haim’s first film after the Me, Myself and I documentary was The Dream Machine, a direct-to-video film released in 1990. Haim co-starred with Patricia Arquette in Prayer of the Rollerboys. He continued starring in direct-to-video films, including Blown Away, The Double 0 Kid and Oh, What a Night. In 1993, he starred in a full motion video game called Double Switch, which was released for the Sega CD and later for the Sega Saturn, as well as for the home computer. Over the next two years, Haim would release sequels to two of his older films; in 1994, Fast Getaway II was released along with National Lampoon’s Last Resort. The following year, Life 101 and another sequel, Dream a Little Dream 2, with Feldman, were released.

In 1996, Haim starred in four more direct-to-video films: Snowboard Academy, Busted with Feldman, Demolition High, and Fever Lake. He had a minor role in a television version of Merlin. After releasing both Never Too Late and the sequel to Demolition High, Demolition University (which he produced), he filed for bankruptcy in 1997.[9]

Early 2000s

Haim attempted to return to the industry in 2000 with another direct-to-video film, Without Malice, with Jennifer Beals and Craig Sheffer. He spent time in rehab. Haim says, “I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck. But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day — the doctors could not believe I was taking that much. And that was just the Valium — I’m not talking about the other pills I went through”.[10]

The next year, Haim appeared in The Back Lot Murders alongside Priscilla Barnes. He became the subject of an E! True Hollywood Story in 2001. He made a cameo role appearance in Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, a film about a former child star who did not live a normal childhood; it featured a range of other former child stars, including Feldman.

In 2002, he guest starred as himself in an episode of the Canadian television series Big Wolf on Campus.

By 2004, Haim appeared to have allegedly overcome his drug habit, after resettling in Toronto. In response to an investigation by The Sun newspaper into what exactly had happened to Haim, he responded saying that: “I’m clean, sober, humble and happy.”[10] In 2006, he was ranked #8 on VH1’s Greatest Teen Stars.

Comeback

On December 4, 2006, Haim began taping an improv/reality show with Feldman titled The Two Coreys. The show premiered on the A&E Network on July 29, 2007. Haim and Feldman signed on for a second season of the show, which aired starting June 22, 2008.[11]

Haim was nominated for a Viewer’s Choice Award at the 22nd Annual Gemini Awards in Canada for his role in The Two Coreys. He was voted #8 in the category of “Favourite Canadian” on a TV Series (not eligible for a Gemini) for his role in the A&E show.[12]

On February 7, 2008, Haim ran a paid ad in the Hollywood trade publication, Variety, stating “This is not a stunt. I’m back. I’m ready to work. I’m ready to make amends”.[13]

In February 2008, filming resumed in Vancouver for Lost Boys: The Tribe. Haim reversed his previous decision to not participate in the film, but did not appear on-screen until the closing credits.

Feldman stated his refusal to have further contacts with Haim until he recovered from his addiction.[14] A&E decided against a third season of The Two Coreys and canceled it in July 2008.[15] Amid their estrangement, there were unconfirmed reports that Warner Brothers plans to release a Lost Boys 3 — with both of their characters facing off. In that scenario, Jamison Newlander would join the cast.[16][17] Feldman was confirmed to star in, and executive produce, Lost Boys: The Thirst.

In 2008, Haim joined the cast of Shark City, which filmed in Toronto with Vivica Fox, Carlo Rota, David Phillips, and Jefferson Brown, and premiered in 2009. Haim was reported to be in two films scheduled for a 2010 release: The Pick Up and SAD (Standard American Diet).

Personal life

Haim was never married. He was once engaged to actress Nicole Eggert.[18]

Death

On March 10, 2010, Corey Haim was taken to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California and pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. (22:15 UTC) Los Angeles police said that Haim’s death appeared to be accidental and may have been due to an overdose, but that no illicit drugs were found at the scene.
